The method

A kanji is a few simple parts. Give them a scene.

  1. 1

    See the parts

    休 is a person 亻 and a tree 木.

  2. 2

    Read the story

A tired person leans back against a tree with eyes closed to rest.

  3. 3

    Keep the picture

Next time you meet 休, the scene comes back before you think about strokes.

Mountain, rain, flower, bird, fire, river. Every N5 kanji has a picture like these.

Questions

What is Kanji Guide?

Kanji Guide teaches 2,131 kanji from JLPT N5 to N1. Each kanji comes with a short picture story, animated stroke order, on and kun readings and example words, plus spaced-review practice to keep what you learn.

How does the picture-story method work?

Every kanji is broken into familiar parts, and each part becomes a character in a small scene. The scene gives you the meaning, and the parts give you the shape. You remember a picture instead of memorising lines.

Does it work on Android?

Yes. The study app runs in any modern phone browser, including Chrome on Android. You can add it to your home screen so it opens like a normal app.

Do I need to know Japanese first?

No. You start with the simplest kanji and the app introduces parts before it uses them in larger characters. Readings and example words are shown, but meaning comes first.

Do I have to write kanji by hand?

No. You watch the stroke order animation to see how each character is built. There is no handwriting input. Review asks you to recall meanings.

Does every kanji have a picture?

Every N5 kanji has its own picture today, and more are added as the library grows. A kanji without a picture still has its story, parts, readings and examples.

Is there an iPhone app?

Yes, Kanji Guide started as an iOS app. The web version covers the same method, so you can study on iPhone, Android or a computer.

How much does it cost?

Pricing has not been announced yet. You can open the app and start with the first kanji now.
